RISE Collaborative to Host Imperfect Pixels Exhibition in Denver

Created by artist and community designer Travis Sheridan, Imperfect Pixels is an interactive art exhibition, educational series, and novel way to support local organizations working to address racial equity and social justice.

In Denver from June 18 through August 17, this traveling exhibition will feature nine pieces created in tribute of black lives lost across the country including one unique piece made specifically to honor a life lost in the Denver area.

Imperfect Pixels will be hosted at RISE Collaborative Workspace, a female-focused destination for professional women of all ages to work, collaborate and succeed. As an international innovation community leader, Sheridan chose RISE because of its commitment to capacity building.

”RISE Collaborative is on a mission to create a pipeline for success for women and girls,” says Stacy Taubman, founder and CEO of RISE Collaborative. “To do that, we need to help create a more equitable world. This exhibit will help spark important conversations focused on creating equity for all, and RISE is proud to be the host sponsor.”

25% of the proceeds of pieces sold during the exhibition will be donated to three local organizations doing work to increase racial equity, social justice, and a more equitable economy. Denver partner organizations will be announced May 20.

Starting in 2014, Sheridan has used art to help him make sense of a growingly senseless world. The Imperfect Pixels series started following the death of George Floyd and the overwhelming erasure of Black lives from the community. The exhibit was first featured in St. Louis where he lives and the intention of this exhibit is to move beyond the headlines, and pause to reflect on the lives lost and the legacy that remains.

“There is a known truth in the Black community: Perfect compliance isn’t enough to avoid getting killed,” said Sheridan. “Once a member of the Black community is killed, the person’s imperfections surface and the reality of who that person was becomes distorted. Their life becomes an inverted version of their often short-lived reality.”

Sheridan’s work consists of images that only become clear to the viewer when they stop and interact with it. He invites people to pause and connect with each piece as a way of gaining a deeper understanding.

In addition to the opening and closing events, Sheridan will host three live events in which he interviews local stakeholders based on the three critical areas of focus:

  • Art & Justice - The power of Activism (featuring a local activist)

  • Art & Policy - The power of Leadership (featuring an elected official)

  • Art & Economy - The power of Independence (featuring a local entrepreneur)

These sessions will also be recorded live for wider access within the community and events. The goal is for Imperfect Pixels to be a local catalyst of change.

The exhibit is also open to the public during normal business hours (8am to 5pm) Monday through Friday at RISE Collaborative Workspace: 730 Colorado Blvd. Suite 200 Denver, CO 80206. For additional information visit imperfectpixels.art.
